(FREMONT COUNTY, Colo.) — The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of flood conditions due to an ice jam in the Arkansas River, and a flood warning is in effect until 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18.
The NWS said the ice jam was reported by Fremont County Emergency Management just after 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The jam was reported in the Arkansas River in Fremont County, to include Florence and Penrose.
The NWS said Locations along County Road 119 along the Arkansas River near Florence are being threatened by high water due to ice jam, and flooding is already occurring. Depending on ice behavior, any release of the ice jam could result in sudden rises of water, leading to a rapid flooding situation.

NWS said precautions should be taken for those living and travelling in the area. Stay away from river banks and culverts, and make sure you are subscribed to Fremont County’s emergency alerts.
“Turn around, don’t drown”—never try to drive through flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in cars, NWS said.
