Long-time voice of CU Buffs and Broncos Larry Zimmer dies

DENVER (KDVR) — Long-time radio broadcaster Larry Zimmer passed away Saturday at the age of 88.

Zimmer was the voice of both the University of Colorado Boulder Buffaloes and Denver Broncos with flagship radio station KOA.

With the Buffaloes, Zimmer was behind the microphone for more than 42 seasons covering both basketball and football games.

In addition, Zimmer was in the booth for 36 seasons with the Broncos as a color commentator from 1971-1989, and handling play-by-plays from 1990-96. His tenure included more than 500 Broncos games, including 20 postseason games and four Super Bowls.

When including the football games he called for the University of Michigan (51) and Colorado State University (34), Zimmer tallied 1,107 games between the college and professional ranks.

Zimmer retired as the KOA Sports Director in 2004, but he continued to call games for Colorado through the 2015 season.

Spanning seven decades of broadcasting, Zimmer also covered the Olympics, NFL Europe, College World Series, World Cup ski events and NCAA basketball for NBC, CBS and ESPN.

He was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
