(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The family of four-year-old Elijah Rudd, who tragically lost his life in November 2022, is still grappling with grief and searching for answers as they reevaluate the circumstances surrounding his death. Elijah’s family recently spoke with FOX21 expressing anguish over the pain the young boy endured. Court documents reveal that at the time of his death, Elijah was in so much pain, he was unable to walk. His family is now questioning why Rudd did not seek medical attention for him until he was found unresponsive, foaming at the mouth, and covered in vomit.

Rudd was arrested earlier this month in connection with the death of her son, on felony charges of Child Abuse Causing Death.

Melesha Merriweather, Elijah’s grandmother, lamented, “My thing is, he was a really, really good kid. Very smart, very bright, and it hurts because no child deserves this.”

In the months leading up to Elijah’s death, concerns were raised by his biological father, Derrick Rudd, who noticed Elijah appeared unkempt, with matted hair, and overall disheveled whenever he stayed with Raven and her boyfriend.

“Like he hadn’t bathed in days, looking like he could be homeless,” Derrick also revealed that Elijah often asked if he could stay with him.

Days before the incident, Elijah’s grandmother spoke to him and Raven over a video call. Elijah, lying down and complaining of a stomach ache, was allegedly cut off by Raven before he could explain further.

“Eli was in so much pain that they told Raven she needed to take him to the hospital… I feel that she did not take him to the hospital because she knew the extent of his injuries,” Merriweather alleged.

Court documents indicate that Raven did not take Elijah to the hospital because she believed she knew what was best for him and anticipated his recovery by the end of the week. As the family continues to grapple with the loss, they question why Raven did not prioritize Elijah’s well-being, especially given the severity of his injuries.

On the day Elijah died, Derrick arrived at the hospital trying to figure out what happened. He said Raven’s account of the events leading to his death changed three times. The evolving narratives included stories of Elijah falling off a bunk bed and falling off a rock during a hike.

However, medical professionals pronounced Elijah dead at the hospital, revealing injuries, including bruising, fractured ribs, a lacerated liver, and a brain bleed, none of which were consistent with the stories she told Derrick.

The coroner determined that these injuries were three to five days old, ruling Elijah’s death as a homicide.

The devastating news has left the family in profound grief, with Merriweather expressing anger toward Raven, stating, “I felt like, even if you didn’t do this, you allowed this to happen because you did not protect your child at all costs… Our lives are forever changed, and there’s nothing that anybody could do or say to bring Elijah back. We will always have that hole in our hearts.”

To the family and police, Raven denied any knowledge of what caused Elijah to become unresponsive. Raven is currently being held at the El Paso County Jail on a $60,000 bond. Her next hearing is on Feb. 7, where they are supposed to decide whether her case will go to trial.
