(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The cause of the structure fire that happened on Friday, April 5, leading to a two-alarm call and three structures lost has been determined by the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD)
On Friday at around 11 a.m., firefighters were called to a structure fire on West Jefferson Street near Centennial Boulevard and North Chestnut Street on the west side of Colorado Springs. Callers reported seeing thick smoke coming from an outbuilding in the area and said the fire was quickly spreading to a home. Firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later and saw smoke coming from multiple structures. During an external search, firefighters reported a small grass fire, which due to high winds, extension to brush, and heavy fire a second alarm was called in.
Crews initially fought the fire inside the home in order to save as much of the structure as they could but CSFD said due to high winds, the fire spread quickly and forced crews to go on the defensive to avoid the roof collapsing on them.
It took several hours until crews were able to get the fire under control. CSFD reports that three structures, an outbuilding, a shed, and a home were a total loss. Two people have been displaced but no injuries were reported during the fire.
CSFD Fire Investigators said the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to an electrical event in a workshop.
