DENVER (KDVR) — Spring has sprung, and the warmer weather might have you eager to grab a leash and head out on a local trail for some fresh air with your pet.
However, it is good to keep in mind that there might be more in the wild besides gorgeous views.
This can include dangerous plants and wildlife, and knowing what is what might be crucial to saving your pet’s life.
FOX31 looked at Colorado State University’s poisonous plant guide to find which plants could be found in Colorado and cross-referenced it with a list of plants that are toxic to dogs and cats created by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The following plants are found in Colorado and can prove toxic to both dogs and cats:
Black walnut (toxic only to dogs)
Onions (wild and storebought)
Some of these plants are also toxic to humans, but not all are.
The effects these plants have on animals can vary, and some can even cause death if ingested.
There are also many common foods that you may find in your pantry that are also toxic to dogs and cats including things like avocados, grapes and chocolate, according to the ASPCA.
The ASPCA suggests pet owners call their vet if they suspect their pet has ingested a dangerous plant or substance first, but it also has a hotline available for people to call. There may be a consultation fee.
