Man arrested in Pueblo after police standoff

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A man was arrested on numerous robbery charges in Pueblo on Wednesday, May 15, following a standoff with police on 7th Avenue.

According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), the incident began around 8:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of 7th Avenue, on the north side of Pueblo, after detectives visited the address on a robbery follow-up.

PPD said the robberies occurred over a two-week period in April. During the robbery investigation, 31-year-old Gerard Romero was identified as a suspect, and an arrest warrant was issued for him as well as a search warrant of his home. PPD said Romero was suspected of robbing 10 local businesses.

Detectives and SWAT team members responded to the home on Wednesday morning, and tried to make contact with Romero, however PPD said he refused to come out and stated that he had a gun. The public was asked to avoid the area for about an hour due to the heavy police response.

Crisis Negotiators were able to contact Romero by phone, and he eventually agreed to come out unarmed. Romero was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Pueblo County Detention Center on his warrants.
