Sunday marked 12 years since the Waldo Canyon Fire began

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Sunday, June 23, marked 12 years since the Waldo Canyon Fire, the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, began. The fire continued for over two weeks, burned over 18,000 acres, destroyed 347 homes, and cost the lives of two people.

Those who lived in the area at the time remember the sight of the fire moving down the mountain towards the city, the darkened skies, and ash falling like snow. Friends offered their homes for displaced loved ones, and communities faced the devastation of losing homes and beloved landmarks, such as the Flying W. Ranch.

In the 12 years since, neighborhoods have been rebuilt and vegetation has regrown, but you can still find the scars that the fire left behind. And as the community moves forward together, we will also never forget.

In 2022, FOX21 News looked back on ten years, and the special can be viewed below.
