Broncos coach Sean Payton says he likes where team is at after 1st preseason game

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) – The Denver Broncos are getting back to work for the first time after their opening preseason game, and head coach Sean Payton is pleased.

“I like where we’re at right now,” Payton said after their 34-30 victory over the Indianapolis Colts Sunday.

As expected, rookie quarterback Bo Nix worked with the first team Wednesday in what was a light but long practice without pads.

Looking back at Sunday’s game, Payton praised Nix on his decision making.

“I felt he was comfortable in the pocket and thought his (pass) locations were good. The No. 1 thing to do at quarterback is lead your team. And we scored (on all four possessions). Ultimately that’s their job,” he said.

Payton hasn’t tipped his hand on which of the team’s three quarterbacks, Nix, Jarrett Stidham or Zach Wilson, will open the season in Seattle against the Seahawks.

When asked about Nix’s play, he continued to get high reviews from his veteran teammates.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey described the rookie as having “no fear of competition” and said he shows a unique combination of “humility and confidence.”

For now, it’s about looking at the second game of the preseason, when the Green Bay Packers come to Denver for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Extra Points

Payton expects cornerback Patrick Surtain II to start Sunday against the Packers. The Pro Bowl defensive back sat out Sunday’s preseason game.

The Broncos will wear pads on Thursday in a regular practice then again on Friday in their joint practice with Green Bay.
