Colorado Springs family relying on faith after near-fatal motorcycle crash

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — It was a near-perfect day in June for Tareja and Nathan Mitchem’s family as they strolled through a trail near Woodland Park.

“I was taking pictures and videos of us hiking together,” Tareja said. “Little did I know, that was going to be the last footage of my husband being able to walk.”

That evening, Nathan took his motorcycle out and he did not return home. A short five hours later, Tareja checked her voicemail; a message from the nearby hospital requested her immediate presence. Nathan had been in a motorcycle crash.

He’d spend days in the ICU and weeks in the hospital. Currently, he’s undergone multiple surgeries. “The officers that I talked to said we did not think he was going to make it,” Tareja said. “It’s nothing short of a miracle that he’s alive.”

The future for the Mitchem family looks like this; Nathan has at least a year of rehab and Tareja is unable to work, acting as his full-time caregiver. “The last year we’ve had, it’s already been so much,” she said.

The Mitchems own a liquidation reselling business, Blue Spruce Mercantile. In the spring, FOX21 detailed a report on the series of robberies that had taken place at the struggling business. The motorcycle crash has sent the family over the edge financially. “We are no longer able to operate,” Tareja said, who also runs the Take Courage Collective which details her husband’s recovery.

Blue Spruce Mercantile will have its final day on Aug. 24. The Mitchem Family Fundraiser will be held on Aug. 30 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Trace Church.

Despite the mountainous bills, faith is pushing the family forward. “We both have a very strong faith. We know that God is going to see us through, we both have a strong entrepreneurial spirit so that hasn’t died even though our business has.”
