DENVER (KDVR) — Attention truckers: Don’t forget those chains. All commercial motor vehicles over 16,000 pounds must carry snow chains on several high country roads.
In May, the Colorado Senate signed SB24-100, the “Commercial Vehicle Highway Safety Measures,” which expanded the locations where chain laws are required. Previously, truckers were only required to carry chains on Interstate 70 between Dotsero and Morrison.
Now, thanks to the new bill, from Sept. 1 to May 31, truckers must carry four snow chains or adequate alternate traction devices on their trucks if they are driving on the following roads:
I-70 west of milepost 259 (Morrison)
Colorado Highway 9 milepost 63 to milepost 97 (Frisco to Fairplay)
Route 40 west of milepost 256 (Empire)
U.S. Route 50 west of milepost 225 (Salida)
U.S. Route 160 west of MP 250 (Morrison)
U.S. Route 550 from milepost 0 to 130 (New Mexico-Colorado state line to Montrose)
Aside from the chain law, the new bill also implemented new lane restrictions for truckers.
According to the bill, truckers can no longer use the left lane on the following roadways:
In Glenwood Canyon
In Dowd Junction (I-70 between Avon and Vail)
The west side of Vail Pass
The tunnel grade on both sides of the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels
Georgetown Hill
Floyd Hill
The Colorado State Patrol said new signage is being placed along these roadways, and commercial drivers are urged to pay attention to where the rules are changing. To learn more or prepare for an upcoming trip, truckers can use COtrip to plan their drive.
