(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A 72-year-old woman has been arrested in Pueblo after her husband was found dead of apparent stab wounds in their shared unit at a retirement community, and the woman was reportedly covered in blood, according to arrest documents.
The arrest affidavit for 72-year-old Kathy Lawton details what the investigation revealed about the Nov. 24 homicide of 85-year-old Larry Lawton at the Bonaventure of Pueblo retirement home.
According to the affidavit, Kathy approached the front desk of the facility shortly before 6 p.m. on Nov. 24 covered in blood and “hysterical,” saying that her husband was dead. Two employees of the facility went up to the independent living unit that Kathy and Larry shared, where they found Larry lying in the living room with his legs tangled up in his walker, and several punctures and lacerations on his chest, hands, and arms.
The documents state that there were bloody paper towels around Larry’s body, and a blood trail leading from the body to a bedroom of the apartment and on the bedsheets. A knife was found on an end table in the living room, and the documents allege that the knife looked as though someone had “tried to wipe the knife clean.”
When officers spoke with Kathy, they noted that she smelled of alcohol, and one of the employees of the facility also reported that Kathy smelled so strongly of alcohol when she came to the front desk that it almost made the employee sick.
When questioned, Kathy told officers and facility employees that Larry had fallen, though officers reported that her statements were inconsistent and she was “argumentative and uncooperative.” The documents state that there had been a history of domestic violence-related incidents involving the couple in the past, and a neighbor attested to hearing them yelling at each other just hours before the stabbing.
Once Kathy was taken to the Pueblo Police Department for questioning, she explained that she had a temper, and would throw things and hit Larry on occasion. When she was asked whether Larry was ever physically violent toward her, Kathy said “no,” and described Larry as patient, honest, and sweet, though she said he drank a lot.
Kathy said she and Larry had gotten into an argument, but she could not recall what they had argued about. According to the documents, when questioned about how the blood had gotten onto her, as well as injuries to Kathy’s hands, she replied “If you’re accusing me, I want a lawyer… you better watch out.” After confronting Kathy with what the evidence suggested at the scene, Kathy reportedly became “irrational and erratic,” and police ended the interview.
Following the interview and during processing, the documents state that Kathy was frequently cursing and yelling at officers. Kathy was taken to the Pueblo County Jail where she is being held on second-degree murder charges. She is scheduled for a first appearance in Pueblo County Court on Dec. 5.
