Captain’s House to be demolished due to safety concerns

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) announced it plans to begin the demolition of the Captain’s House at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility (CTCF) on Monday, Jan. 27.

The Captain’s House is located between the Museum of Colorado Prisons and the Associate Warden’s House (the turret house) and has long been a part of the correctional facility property.

The house has been deemed structurally unsafe and poses significant safety risks. The building has remained closed to the public due to these concerns and does not hold a formal historical designation.

While the deteriorating conditions prevent it from preservation, the CDOC has collaborated with the Museum of Colorado Prisons to preserve items of historical significance from the house. The artifacts have been transferred to the museum to ensure that the legacy of the Captain’s House is honored and available for public education.

When the demolition is complete, the land will be leased to the Museum of Colorado Prisons, which plans to turn the area into a green space for visitors.
