CSFD warns against drone use during emergencies

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is warning drone operators about using their drones during emergency response operations after an incident on Saturday, March 1.

According to CSFD, on Saturday, while CSFD was fighting a structure fire, a non-CSFD/CSPD drone was flying over the fire, causing concern for a CSFD drone pilot. The CSFD pilot was trying to get information on the fire to fire crews on the ground to show where active fire or hotspots were.

CSFD wants to remind the public that operating a drone without authorization in or near the disaster area may violate federal, state, or local laws even if a Temporary Flight Restriction is not in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that drone operators can be subject to significant fines if they interfere with emergency response operations.
