Man restrained on Frontier flight from Denver facing federal charge

DENVER (KDVR) — A man who was on a flight from Denver to Houston in February has been charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities after he broke the airplane’s window and had to be restrained by fellow passengers.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas, Raul Ramos Tamayo, 31, was onboard a Frontier flight on Feb. 4. The office said that approximately 30 minutes after the plane departed from the Denver International Airport, Tamayo “began punching the seat in front of him.”

The Texas attorney’s office said that a flight crew member approached Tamayo, who then began striking the window in his row, “causing damage to the window.”

The crew member asked for assistance from any law enforcement or able-bodied passengers at that point, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. A passenger of the flight told Houston’s FOX26 that they used “shoestrings and belts, headphones,” to restrain Tamayo.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tamayo, a Cuban national, was placed in the airline’s flex cuffs onboard.

“When the public flies, they need to feel confident that they are doing so under safe conditions,” said U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei in a release. “Given the fact that greater Houston has two major international airports, with tens of millions of travelers a year, the Southern District of Texas is always ready to prosecute those that endanger the safety of passengers.”

If convicted of the charge, Tamayor faces up to 20 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
