EPSO and DPW clear hazardous debris from homeless camp

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) and the El Paso County Department of Public Works (DPW) removed hazardous debris and trash from a homeless encampment under an overpass close to South Academy Boulevard and I-25.

EPSO supported DPW in clearing the site near Chamberlin South, in unincorporated El Paso County, which was identified as a priority due to an upcoming bridge inspection.

“I am extremely pleased with the success of today’s cleanup operation,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “I thank our Department of Public Works partners and my EPSO Reserve Deputies for their planning and work to execute this important project.”

A notice was posted with a notice to vacate the area last week, and EPSO deputies secured and cleared the site. No illegal trespassers were encountered. DPW employees and heavy equipment operators facilitated the cleanup.

“My Office continually focuses on protecting the property rights of individuals while balancing the need to serve those who are facing mental health issues, drug addiction, and homelessness in the Pikes Peak region,” said Roybal. “Today’s operation will allow the upcoming bridge inspection to be conducted safely and without delay and ensure hazardous materials are disposed of properly.”

According to EPSO, the debris taken from the location was enough to fill the back of one dump truck.
