64-year-old dies attempting to hike Manitou Incline

(MANITOU SPRINGS) — A 64-year-old man died on Tuesday morning, April 15 after attempting to hike the Manitou Springs Incline.

According to the City of Manitou Springs, a 911 call was received shortly before 10:30 a.m. from bystanders on the Incline who were trying to help a man in medical distress. The Manitou Springs Fire Department and Manitou Springs Police Department both responded, and upon arrival, found bystanders already performing CPR on the man.

The man, identified as a 64-year-old from Oregon based on personal identification in his possession, was unresponsive when emergency crews got to the scene. He was later pronounced dead.

“We thank the bystanders who quickly intervened and attempted CPR,” said Manitou Springs Fire Chief Keith Buckmiller. “Their immediate actions are commendable and reflect the compassion of our community.”

The City added that the Incline is a challenge even for the most accomplished athletes, and encourages the community and visitors to prepare before attempting it.

“The Manitou Incline is a popular but strenuous hiking destination that draws visitors from around the country,” the City said. “City officials remind all climbers, especially those traveling from out of state, to thoroughly assess their physical condition, understand the difficulty of the climb, and come properly prepared. The Incline gains over 2,000 feet of elevation in under one mile, making it a physically demanding route that should not be underestimated.”

The man’s cause of death is under investigation, and the City of Manitou Springs sent its condolences to his family and loved ones.
