(CRIPPLE CREEK, Colo.) — Cripple Creek said it is time to start planning if you want to participate in the sixth annual Pearl DeVere Day Bed Races, which are happening earlier this year than before.
The event benefits the Old Homestead House Museum. Built in 1896 by Pearl DeVere, the homestead was the most elegant brothel in the Cripple Creek Mining District during its heyday, according to the Old Homestead Museum. The house has been operated as a museum since 1958, and the museum hopes to preserve the piece of Colorado history for future generations.
The annual Bed Race involves teams of three people, two “Johns” and one “Pearl.” Pearl will ride on the bed with one John while the Johns take turns pushing the bed on Cripple Creek Street. One John will push the bed to the turnaround point, switch places, and the second John will push to the start/finish line.

Entry into the race is $30 per team with the team making the bed, and $40 if using a premade bed from the museum. The event will take place on June 7, which is earlier than previous years.
The Old Homestead House Museum said it is up to the teams to decide the designation of their team, and there are no gender restrictions on roles; however, one member of the team must be “Pearl” and stay on the bed for the entire race.
The fastest time from all races will be declared the overall winner, with the number of races determined by the number of entries. Teams will also be judged for the best decorations and costumes.
