Davidson added that the fire is burning grass and trees, and is located behind Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, a fort used in the 1840s as a trading post. The fire is located on Highway 50 at milepost 387.

A code red message that was sent out on Sunday evening has since been recalled. Davidson said there were no pre-evacuations or evacuations in place, and there is no current threat to any buildings.

According to the La Junta Fire Department Facebook page, the department’s fire crews, along with Rocky Ford Fire and crews from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, were working on securing the perimeter around 11 a.m. on Monday, including cutting trees that were still burning toward the tops.

The department reported that the fire was reported to have started in the barrow ditch, and Sunday’s strong winds spread it toward the river bottom. Crews worked overnight to make sure the fire didn’t spread any further and to protect Bent’s Old Fort.

FOX21 News will continue monitoring the fire and will update this article when more information becomes available.
