(COLORADO SPRINGS) — During his town hall in Colorado Springs on Tuesday, April 29. Colorado Attorney General (AG) Phil Weiser talked about his latest lawsuit against the Trump Administration.
This latest lawsuit involves potential cuts to AmeriCorps, a federal agency providing volunteer work across the country.
“AmeriCorps gives eight to 10 million dollars in grants to Colorado. AmeriCorps has hundreds of volunteers in Colorado,” Weiser said. “If we allow them to dismantle AmeriCorps, we’re going to lose those volunteers, we’re going to lose those grants.”
The other 14 lawsuits that are challenging Trump’s actions include tariffs, cuts to the Department of Education, and the President’s plan to try and scale back the size of the federal government. Trump has said the country needs to reduce the national budget while bringing in more revenue, which is part of the reason he has implemented tariffs on other countries.
With all the lawsuits against Trump, FOX21 News asked Weiser whether he agreed with anything the Trump Administration has done.
“There’s been a lot that’s been harmful and challenging, and that’s what we’re focused on as there are things that may save money, like ending the penny? Sure, we can work together on that,” Weiser said. “Sadly, this administration has not led with careful, thoughtful actions.”
Weiser said the lawsuits he’s filed are aimed at ensuring the federal government does not overstep its boundaries and dictate state law.
“Of course, we want to win in court and stop the harm but we’re also putting a spotlight on behavior, we’re making a point that AmeriCorps does legally valid and important work,” Weiser said.
Out of the 15 lawsuits, Weiser has led the charge on two of them, which included one concerning Trump’s order to ban birthright citizenship. Weiser did say he would go to the Supreme Court to testify on behalf of those lawsuits.
