Man who shot Pueblo Police officer sentenced to 44 years

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — A Pueblo judge has sentenced a man who shot an officer during an incident on Friday, May 2.

Deon Council-Rivera was arrested in October 2023 in connection with a shooting where an officer was shot while responding to a domestic violence incident. Council-Rivera, the suspect, opened fire on officers, hitting one of them. At that time, PPD said the officer was taken to the hospital and their injuries did not appear life-threatening.

Earlier in November 2024, he was found guilty of three counts: Assault in the Third Degree – Domestic Violence, Obstruction of Telephone Service – Domestic Violence, and Child Abuse. The jury was unable to come to a unanimous verdict on the remaining counts, and after consulting with the victims, a plea agreement was reached where Council-Rivera pled guilty to one count of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, a class 2 Felony and Assault in the Second Degree on a Peace Officer, a class four Felony.

On Friday, he was sentenced to 44 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections.

“The officers in this case responded to a domestic violence call that morning. They were simply doing their job when the defendant made the deliberate decision to open fire on them,” said District Attorney Kala Beauvaius. “Not only did the defendant place the officers in danger, but also his girlfriend, her child, neighbors, and other nearby community members. Since this shooting, 4 other officers have been shot in our community. This conduct cannot and will not be tolerated.”
