Mother’s Day treats with Chef Janon

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11, and Chef Janon Bourgeois, a local chef and culinary instructor, joined FOX21 Morning News on Wednesday, May 7, along with her son Miles, to share some sweet treat ideas for mom.

In the above video, watch how Janon and Miles use a store-bought pie crust and an index card to make homemade pop-tarts. Filling options are endless, from sunflower butter and chocolate to jams and fresh strawberries.

They also demonstrated how to make donuts using biscuits. To make the glaze, mix powdered sugar and a liquid together. “You can use milk, you can use fruit juice,” said Janon. In this demonstration, she used Fresca.

For moms who love to spend time in the kitchen with their kids it can be fun to try out new recipes. A current internet trend is the making of “tanghulu,” a traditional Chinese candied fruit snack, typically made by coating skewered fruit in a hard sugar shell.

Chef Janon said the most important thing to remember when cooking with kids is to keep your cool. “When you’re cooking with your kids, there are no mistakes,” said Janon.
