(ESTES PARK, Colo.) — A female elk in Estes Park is turning heads because of her striking facial markings, which Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said are very rare.
According to CPW, the female (cow) elk is a piebald–an animal having irregular patches of white along with more typical colors. Think of Calico cats, the American paint horse, and some multicolored cows.
CPW said this genetic mutation is very rare in elk, only occurring in one out of every 100,000 elk. For perspective, Colorado’s elk population is estimated at more than 290,000–meaning this cow elk would be one of only about three individuals in the entire state with this mutation.
And while this elk is very striking, CPW reminds anyone who may be venturing up into the mountains for a glimpse of her to respect her space and admire her from afar.
