Long range forecast: Is the warm air here to stay?

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — We’ve seen some pretty warm temperatures lately that have been way above normal and even close to record-breaking.

Taking a look at the highs for Tuesday, May 13, you can see that forecasted highs were 13 to 15 degrees warmer than normal and just short of tying the record set back in 1941.

While this pattern has set in the region for awhile, the question remains whether the warm weather is here to stay or if we still have cooler weather coming. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) is one place we can look for a longer range weather outlook.

Note that CPC outlooks show the probability of something happening, meaning ‘are conditions more or less likely to occur?’ It is not an actual forecast.

According to the CPC Outlook, the next eight to 14 days are more likely to be cooler than average and wetter than average. This could mean that the warmer streak will come to an end for the end of May with conditions being cooler with a little more moisture.

The CPC also shows that conditions are likely to be warmer than average three to four weeks out for the start of June.
