PCSO: One arrested, one seriously injured in fight at Runyon Sports Complex

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — One person was left seriously injured in a fight at Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo on Sunday, June 8. One person has been arrested and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) said additional charges are expected against another.

According to PCSO, deputies responded to the sports complex shortly after 5 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a fight. When deputies arrived, they found medical personnel already attending to an unconscious 46-year-old man. The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Another man was also treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses told deputies that a group of people were leaving the complex when two women started arguing. Two men were reportedly attempting to defuse the situation when one of them was hit in the face by another man. The victim went unconscious and fell to the ground, PCSO said.

A second man was injured when he was hit with a baseball bat by another man. PCSO said both suspects left the area after the assaults.

Deputies were able to identify both suspects and tried to contact them at a home in the City of Pueblo. When they arrived at the home, deputies made contact with 52-year-old Armando Carbajal, who was identified as the suspect with the baseball bat. Carbajal was arrested on an outstanding warrant as well as charges of second-degree assault and felony menacing. He has been booked into the Pueblo County Jail.

The second suspect was seen at the home by deputies, but PCSO said that suspect was able to leave before deputies could make contact with him. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate him. Charges are forthcoming for the second suspect, PCSO said.

In a statement released on Monday, Pueblo County expressed condolences to the loved ones of the victims involved:

“Our thoughts are with those affected. We are hopeful for their full recovery and are keeping them close in our hearts during this difficult time,” a spokesperson for the County said. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and urge the public to allow the investigation to proceed without speculation. The safety of all athletes, coaches, staff, families, and spectators remains our highest priority. Runyon Field has long been a cornerstone of youth and community sports in Pueblo, and we remain firmly committed to maintaining it as a safe and welcoming space for all.”

Due to the ongoing investigation, Pueblo County said Runyon Field would remain closed until Wednesday.
