Washout road work underway at North Cheyenne Cañon Park

(COLORADO) — The Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services has begun repairs of two roads on North Cheyenne Cañon Road that were affected by a washout earlier in June.

During the first week of June, significant rain in the City, along with other unknown factors, caused the washout of an entire lane of Cheyenne Canyon Road.

The washout occurred on Wednesday, June 4, and crews placed large boulders to prevent further road damage. Due to the road damage, the washout forced the closure of both North Cheyenne Canyon and Gold Camp Roads. On June 21, Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services reported maintenance would begin Monday, June 23.

“We know how important this road is to residents and park users,” said City Engineer Gayle Sturdivant. “We’re committed to reopening it safely.”

On Monday, preliminary repairs began. According to Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services, crews from Colorado Springs Utilities and the City of Colorado Springs were stabilizing the creek channel — the first step before full road repairs could begin.

“Weather may impact the timeline, but officials expect a better estimate for reopening in the coming weeks,” Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services wrote via Facebook.

At the moment, Gold Camp Road remains closed to the public. Individuals are asked to respect all barricades and closures for their safety and the safety of repair crews.
