Pueblo County confirms first human case of West Nile Virus

(PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo.) — The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment (PDPHE) has confirmed the first positive human case of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus develops in the human body 2 to 14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. West Nile virus can be serious, including fever, meningitis, encephalitis, and has the potential to cause long-term disability. The human case is the first in Pueblo County in 2025.

“It is very important for every individual to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes that spread West Nile virus illness,” stated Alicia Solis, program manager at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. “West Nile virus can be very serious, and in this case, has led to hospitalization.”


West Nile Virus: What is it and how to prevent it

Symptoms of West Nile virus may include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle weakness, rash, stiff neck, or changed mental state. Some infected people experience a feeling of extreme tiredness and weakness for several weeks. Individuals with these symptoms are encouraged to immediately seek medical attention if they experience any of these symptoms.

Earlier in July, Colorado reported the first two human cases of the year in Adams County. According to the El Paso County Public Health (EPCPH), most human cases of West Nile virus in Colorado are reported in August and September.

PDPHE advises individuals to protect themselves from the virus by following these:

DRAIN standing water around your house weekly.

DUSK AND DAWN are when mosquitoes are most active. Limit outdoor activities and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites during these times.

DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect repellents. Always follow label instructions carefully.

DRESS in long sleeves and pants in areas where mosquitoes.

The risk of infection is highest for those who work outside or participate in outdoor activities, as they become exposed to mosquitoes.
