(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Olympic City USA will not be the next headquarters for USA Gymnastics, according to FOX21’s partner Southern Colorado Business Forum.
According to Business Forum, USA Gymnastics’ headquarters has been in downtown Indianapolis since 2008, but the organization reportedly wanted to consolidate its headquarters and training facilities, now spread among Colorado Springs, Indianapolis and the Houston area, in one place before the 2028 Olympics.
A coalition including the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC, the Colorado Springs Sports Corp., Visit Colorado Springs, state and local agencies and others made a major effort to bring the complex and its 85 employees to Colorado Springs. That included two site visits and up to $2 million in state and local incentives approved by the Colorado Economic Development Commission in November, the Business Forum said.
“This is one we fought hard for, but unfortunately, we finished second. We still look forward to hosting their competitions,” said Chamber & EDC CEO Johnna Reeder Kleymeyer. “I was told by their (USA Gymnastics) COO (Rebecca Holwerda) that we’re second in the running of the locations they were evaluating. Their main concern was losing institutional knowledge of employees not willing to move across the country.”
The winning location will reportedly be announced by USA Gymnastics in the coming days.
“Regardless of the outcome, we have high hopes of hosting their competitions,” said Colorado Springs Sports Corp. CEO Megan Leatham. “It was definitely a community and collaborative effort. Not many cities are able to collaborate on a project of this size. We are excited to take a swing at the next one.”
