DENVER (KDVR) — Interstate 25 was fully closed near Mead on Monday evening after the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was part of a pursuit that ended with the suspect fleeing on foot into oncoming traffic.
At about 7:30 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said there was a heavy police presence on the highway due to a crash, and said detours were in place for traffic heading each direction.
The roadway was closed between Highway 66 and Exit 245, which is near the border of Weld and Larimer counties. The roadway reopened to traffic at about 9 p.m. on Monday.
The agency said that deputies had initiated a traffic stop near Rocky Mountain Avenue and Highway 34 in Loveland at about 5:30 p.m., but the driver drove away from the stop and deputies pursued.
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said that the suspect drove “recklessly” southbound on I-25 before getting a flat tire and stopping at about milepost 245 near Mead.
“The suspect displayed a complete disregard for the safety of others on the highway, driving recklessly and refusing to comply with law enforcement,” said Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer in a release.
That’s when the male suspect got out of his car, allegedly armed with a firearm, and ran across the interstate, according to deputies. The suspect reportedly jumped over the center median and was hit by a car in the northbound lanes of I-25.
First aid was rendered until medical personnel arrived on scene, according to the sheriff’s office. The agency said that three deputies sustained minor injuries in the incident, and they received treatment and have been released. The suspect reportedly suffered serious injuries and is still in a hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.
