(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — A 5-year-old boy who was previously a victim of domestic violence celebrated a big step in his life with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO), the agency that responded when he was injured.
According to EPSO, five years ago, Deputies John Hammond and Patrick Gallagher responded to a domestic violence incident involving a baby that was just 62 days old. As a result of domestic violence, the baby suffered traumatic head injuries, and EPSO said its deputies immediately began fighting for justice.
The baby survived, and on Thursday, Oct. 30, he reunited with EPSO to celebrate a milestone– being adopted by a relative.
“His adoptive mom, who is also a relative of his birth mother, never gave up,” EPSO said. “Through love, perseverance, and the newly expanded Kinship Adoption laws in Colorado, her dream of officially becoming his ‘mom’ came true.”
The little deputy got to tour EPSO’s wildland fire trucks and patrol vehicles.
“We are incredibly grateful to have shared this moment and to have witnessed the beautiful outcome of courage, determination, and love,” EPSO said.
