(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A 17-year-old was killed in a shooting at High Meadows Park on Wednesday, Feb. 28, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
In an update, CSPD said officers originally responded to a reported shooting just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday at High Meadows Park, northeast of North Carefree Circle and North Powers Boulevard. While officers were on their way to the scene, CSPD received another 911 call from a business at North Carefree and Powers, stating that two boys were suffering from gunshot wounds at the business.
When officers and medical personnel arrived, they learned that the two boys had been involved in the shooting call at High Meadows Park. One of the boys had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. That victim was taken to the hospital where he later died.
CSPD said the second victim was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
The coroner identified the victim on Feb. 29, but his identity will not be released in accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 24-72-304 (Riley’s Law). While the coroner will determine the official cause and manner of death, this case is being investigated as a homicide.
At this time, CSPD said a suspect is not in custody; however, the shooting is not believed to be random. CSPD said detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting, including the development of potential suspect information.
This is an active investigation, and CSPD asks anyone with information or who may be a witness to contact police at (719)444-7000. To remain anonymous, you can contact the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719)634-STOP.
