(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Owners of four local businesses downtown that were displaced by a three-alarm fire, later deemed accidental in December, are taking steps to open once again. Meanwhile, a popular bar near Weidner Field will reopen this week after a fire in February.
Taste of Jerusalem Cafe, Yobel and The Look Up Gallery, Icons, and the Local Honey Collective were all impacted by the Dec. 4, 2023 fire in the Majestic Building on East Bijou Street. On Dec. 27, the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) announced the cause of the fire as accidental. It was due to an electrical problem associated with a kitchen refrigerator appliance.
According to the Downtown Partnership, the businesses have all experienced significant financial losses since the fire, so the owners have been adamantly working on reopening in new spots downtown. Here’s what we know so far:
Taste of Jerusalem Cafe
The Downtown Partnership said Taste of Jerusalem will soon be opening a new space inside Avenue 19, called Gyro Express. The food hall is located at 19 North Tejon Street.
Local Honey Co.
Local Honey Co. partnered with both a downtown pop-up shop, Idyll Manor, and Kamp Goods Pottery inside a new co-op space. It’s located in the Meanwhile Block near Weidner Field at 425 South Sierra Madre Street.
Icons
Owners Josh Franklin and John Wolfe are under contract to purchase a new property downtown, according to the Downtown Partnership, and are hoping to raise enough money to reopen soon.
In February, Franklin and Wolfe announced the update on social media and shared photos of the new location on East Kiowa Street.
Yobel and The Look Up Gallery
The Downtown Partnership said Yobel and The Look Up Gallery have participated in First Fridays and other events in a temporary location but are still looking for a permanent space.
Another fire update: Trainwreck
And, good news for another business downtown—Trainwreck, located at 812 South Sierra Madre Street—will reopen on Friday, March 15 after it was impacted by a kitchen fire in February.
The Downtown Partnership said the reopening comes at an excellent time for Trainwreck, as the Switchbacks FC home opener is Saturday, March 16!
