ShotSpotter alert leads to arrest by Pueblo police

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said a gunshot detection system led to the arrest of two men allegedly connected to a drive-by shooting that happened in the overnight hours of Tuesday, March 12.

According to PPD, on Tuesday police were alerted to the 2100 block of East 14th Street near Troy Avenue due to ShotSpotter, a system designed to detect and locate gunfire using acoustic sensors. PPD said the alert also indicated the gunfire was possibly a drive-by shooting.

When officers arrived on the scene they found evidence of gunshots and property damage and were also able to obtain suspect information.

During the investigation, the Communications Center was notified of a crash near the intersection of Eagleridge Boulevard and North Elizabeth Street, and officers were told the vehicle involved in the crash matched the description of the suspect vehicle from the shooting.

Officers went to the crash and saw several people in the vehicle, and upon investigating, found guns and firearm accessories inside and police confirmed the vehicle was involved in the shooting.

PPD said 22-year-old Timothy Roy and 19-year-old Cyrus Highhawk were arrested for Criminal Attempt-Murder in the First Degree, and other charges related to the shooting. A woman also in the car was arrested for an unrelated warrant.

PPD said the Communications Center did not receive any calls from the public about the shooting and added, that if it had not been for ShotSpotter, the incident would not have been immediately reported and investigated.
