Winds cause cancellations, delays at Denver International Airport

DENVER (KDVR) – Areas across Colorado are seeing high wind speeds on Monday, causing all sorts of chaos around the state from blown-down signs to canceled flights.

Monday wind speeds will hit as high as 40 mph around the state while gusts are expected to hit 80 mph. Already, the state is seeing the windy effects.

Earlier in the morning, winds blew down an overhead sign on I-25 which held up the southbound morning commute. Meanwhile, Excel has already received thousands of reports of power outages around the Denver metro area.

At 8 a.m., DIA posted a travel alert on X warning passengers that it’s a windy day and to check their flights and airline status.

FlightAware is tracking cancellations and delays at DIA on Monday. Here are reports as of 12:30 9.m.:

In total, there are 800 delays and 37 cancellations at DIA.

Most of the canceled and delayed flights are from SkyWest, CommuteAir and Southwest with 16, 7 and 6 flights canceled respectively while there are 91 flights delayed at SkyWest, 15 at CommuteAir and 385 flights delayed at Southwest.

As of Monday morning, DIA has the highest amount of canceled in delayed flights out of any airport in the nation.

According to FlightAware, inbound flights are delayed at their origin an average of 1 hour 33 minutes due to wind. There are departure delays of 16-30 minutes due to wind. Meanwhile, arrival delays for airborne aircraft hit an average of 59 minutes.

The airport told FOX31 there were some delays due to wind and that passengers should check with their carrier for delays and cancellations before coming to the airport.
