Young Coloradans show off hard work at State Fair livestock auction

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Young Coloradans showed off all their hard work and dedication at the Colorado State Fair’s Junior Livestock Auction on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

On Tuesday, the young farmers were able to showcase and sell their well-bred and well-fed animals, after months of dedication in feeding, training, and grooming. Some use the money they earn to go towards their college education or to build their own herds one day.

“They put a lot of care, a lot of hard work and sweat equity into their projects,” said Governor Jared Polis, who was in town for the Governor’s Plate competition also happening on Tuesday. “And of course, the reward is your badge. But it’s also when you look him in the eye and say, ‘job well done.’ It’s complimenting their work. They really appreciate that.”

Projects like livestock care can help young people learn basic life skills, like responsibility, goal setting, and knowledge about livestock production.

The sale took place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, though interested buyers still have until Sept. 30 to submit a bid on an animal.
