(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A crash investigation is underway after two children, ages 11 and 16, were hit by an SUV on Monday, Nov. 11.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers responded shortly after 5 p.m. to a crash involving pedestrians near the intersection of East Fountain Boulevard and South Chelton Road, in southeast Colorado Springs. The two pedestrians were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
CSPD said the Major Crash Team responded to investigate. Initial information suggests an SUV was heading eastbound on Fountain Boulevard in the left lane and trying to get into the left turn lane to head northbound on Chelton. Witnesses stated that the SUV hit the two children as they were running across Fountain outside a crosswalk.
CSPD said the driver of the SUV turned around and returned to the scene of the crash. Impairment does not appear to be a factor, and neither does speed, CSPD said. The intersection of Fountain and Chelton was closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
