DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced on Thursday that he is running for governor.
Weiser posted the announcement on X and became the first Democrat to enter the 2026 primary field. Colorado’s current Gov. Jared Polis was reelected to his second term in 2022, and per the term limits, he will not run again in 2026, leaving the seat open to a new candidate.
Currently, Weiser is serving his second term as attorney general of Colorado, but he now has his focus on governorship.
“Today, I’m proud to announce my candidacy for Governor of Colorado. As your Attorney General, I’ve committed from day one to show up in every county, to listen to you, and to get results. As Governor, I will bring that same commitment to make life better for all Coloradans,” said Weiser in a statement on his newly created campaign website.
On his website, Weiser also listed a few of the positions he is running on.
“We must make it more affordable for Coloradans to own or rent a home, protect our freedoms, keep our communities safe, protect our land, air, and water, and create opportunities for our next generation and their future,” said Weiser.
On his first day of candidacy, Weiser posted on X a list of his endorsements, which include former Congressman Ed Perlmutter and Jeni Arndt, mayor of Fort Collins. They are listed on his team as campaign co-chairs.
Further details on his stances and endorsements can be found on his campaign website.
The general election that will decide the new governor and lieutenant governor for Colorado will be held on Nov. 3, 2026.
