DENVER (KDVR) — The former Jefferson County Chief of Schools was found dead after he was allegedly involved in the possession of child sexual assault material.
Chief of Schools David Weiss was terminated on Dec. 19 while a criminal investigation was underway. At the time, Jefferson County Public Schools couldn’t share further information as it was an open investigation. However, on Jan. 2, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the nature of the suspected criminal activity was involving child pornography.
Almost two weeks after Weiss was terminated, he died by suicide.
The sheriff’s office said the Maryland Washington County Sheriff’s Office informed them on Jan. 1 that they were conducting a death investigation of Weiss, who was in Maryland with family for the holidays.
More information about Weiss’ death is expected to come out from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland.
The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office said it will continue the criminal investigation as there’s still a need to understand what happened, if there are any additional people involved, and if they can identify and care for any additional victims.
The sheriff’s office said there’s nothing that leads them to believe the investigation is connected to either case involving a Jefferson County School District social worker or the Lakewood middle school staff member who were arrested for sexual-related crimes against children earlier this year.
Further updates won’t be released until the investigation is complete.
