37-year-old arrested in Cañon City bank robbery

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — A 37-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a bank in Cañon City on Jan. 10.

According to the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD), just before 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 10, officers responded to the US Bank on Macon Avenue on a reported bank robbery. The suspect had left on foot and headed westbound when officers arrived, though officers were able to determine that the suspect was a man.

Through witness statements and surveillance footage, detectives ultimately identified the suspect as 37-year-old Zachary Stanley of Cañon City.

Stanley was arrested on charges of robbery, theft, false report of weapons, false report to authorities, telecommunications crime, and second degree criminal trespass.

“The arrest of Zachary Stanley today is the result of the dedicated work of our Detective Unit, who have each been tirelessly investigating this case since the crime occurred. The success of our detectives in this matter is largely due to the community’s cooperation,” said CCPD Chief John Schick. “We received significant assistance from the neighborhood, providing detectives with invaluable information crucial to our investigation.”

CCPD said an initial request for assistance from the community was sent out via the Custer and Fremont County Everbridge platform, which is an opt-in emergency communication program that sends emergency alerts directly from law enforcement to the community.

CCPD asked community members who have not signed up for Everbridge alerts to do so, as it could provide vital information in an emergency, and alert the community to crimes like the bank robbery on Jan. 10.
