(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Security Fire Department is warning individuals, especially kiddos, of the dangers of exploring storm drainage systems.
The fire department stated that during the weekend of April 4, crews responded to a neighborhood to search for three children and two dogs that had become lost in the maze of the underground storm drainage system.
“Kids may think it would be fun to explore storm drains looking for those ninja turtles, but it can be very dangerous and even deadly,” the fire department said.
According to fire crews, an extensive search was launched to find the children and the dogs. All involved were found more than half a mile from where they had entered.
The fire department warns that getting lost underground poses multiple dangers, including:
Getting lost underground
Hypothermia
Rapid weather changes flooding the system
Oxygen deficiency
Toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide
Critters like rattlesnakes
The Security Fire Department urges parents to talk to their children about playing in and around drainage systems.
