(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — An open house will be held on Wednesday, April 16 for community members to learn about a planned roundabout project at the Highway 24/Peterson Road interchange that begins in May.
The U.S. Highway 24/Peterson Interchange Project will reconstruct the US 24/Peterson Boulevard Interchange, in an effort to provide a safer, more secure, and more efficient transition to the Peterson Space Force Base North Gate.
According to a 2017 study conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), extreme congestion during peak traffic hours necessitated improvements to meet future traffic and regional growth projections. Another study in 2019 concluded that roundabouts on the approach to Highway 24 from Peterson Road would prove the most effective solution to easing congestion.
The City said the project will support base access control in day-to-day and emergency operations and account for increased traffic capacity on the adjacent roadways associated with planned growth in the Pikes Peak region.

According to the City, a portion of the funding for the $15.3 million project comes from a $10.7 million grant from the Defense Community Infrastructure Program received in August 2024.
As part of the community involvement phase of the project, the next open house will be held April 15 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Colorado Freedom Church, 6862 Galley Rd.
