For more than five decades, Sandy’s Restaurant has been a beloved staple in Colorado Springs. A place where locals and visitors alike gather for comfort food with a side of nostalgia.

Sandy’s first opened in the 1970s as a humble cowboy truck stop. Today, it’s a bustling diner packed shoulder-to-shoulder with regulars who treat strangers like old friends.

“If you’re not afraid of strangers, sitting at a community table is… you’ll meet more people than you could even think of,” said Sam Avina, the restaurant’s general manager.

And at Sandy’s, family really is the secret ingredient. Sam works alongside his mom, sisters, wife, uncles, and cousins. “We are a big ole family,” added Liz Avina. “We work together and always look for ways to improve—for our team and our community.”

That family touch extends to the diners, too. On weekends, Sam can be found handing out fresh-baked cookies to guests, just one small way the team shows they care. “It really makes it feel homey, makes it feel like more family,” he said.

From scratch-made breads and biscuits to cinnamon rolls that weigh over a pound, the menu is a comfort food lover’s dream.

“People really feel the love in the food,” said Sam. Best-sellers include Tony’s burrito, six-egg omelets, and the Hangover Skillet — piled high with potatoes, sausage, eggs, and their house-made green chili. Even lunch brings serious flavor with half-pound burgers and club sandwiches, all made in-house.

Sandy’s feeds more than just hungry customers; it fuels the community like firefighters and families in need.

“We’ve even delivered burritos to the fire station pretty close to here,” Sam shared. “Around Christmas, I’ll post on Facebook and invite any families in need to reach out. They come in for a good, hearty breakfast on the weekend… and at the end, we surprise the kids with presents.”

“What I love most about working here is being part of a team that allows us to actually make a difference,” said Liz.

So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, Sandy’s Restaurant is a taste of Colorado Springs you won’t forget.
