(COLORADO SPRINGS) — As the weather warms up, you may be noticing more motorcycles on the road, and with the new lane filtering law, there has been some confusion surrounding what is and isn’t legal.
To properly lane filter on a motorcycle, traffic has to be stopped, you have to be going below 15 miles per hour, you can only pass on the left, and you have to always make sure there’s room for you in between the vehicles that you’re passing.
“You can only pass traffic that is stopped, not going slowly, not in stop and go [traffic] on I-25 or on I-70,” said Colonel Matthew Packard with Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
For lane filtering to be successful in keeping motorcyclists safe, both riders and vehicle drivers need to stay alert on the road, leave room for each other, and make sure to always check your mirrors.
“It takes both four-wheel motorists, two-wheel motorists to come together to make this law work safely and properly,” said motorcycle enthusiast and Sales Manager for Pikes Peak Indian Motorcycles.
Colorado also offers classes to teach new riders all the ins and outs of the road.
If you do not have a helmet or bike yet, they can provide one for you during the course.
