Schools secured during fugitive arrest in Cañon City

(CAÑON CITY, Colo.) — On Wednesday, April 23, two schools in Cañon City were placed on secure status while Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies arrested a fugitive.

According to FCSO, on Wednesday at around 6:30 a.m., deputies attempted to contact 37-year-old Robert E. Tomsic, who the sheriff’s office said was wanted on multiple felony warrants. Deputies’ initial information indicated that Tomsic was in the area of Central Avenue and Robbie Lane.

Through FCSO’s investigation, they identified a home where Tomsic could be located, and detectives surveilled the property. Later in the afternoon, detectives obtained a search warrant and attempted to contact Tomsic.

FCSO said Tomsic left the home through a window and led deputies on a foot chase throughout the neighborhood, where he was eventually captured without incident. During this time, Mountain View and Harrison schools were placed on secure status, safeguarded by the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD).
