(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A minor with an “extensive criminal history” was taken into custody on Wednesday, May 7, after detectives with the Motor Vehicle Theft (MVT) unit began investigating two stolen vehicles allegedly involving the same suspect, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).
During their investigation, detectives “…learned this same juvenile pointed a gun at a victim during a burglary of a car, a separate criminal incident,” according to CSPD. Detectives said the alleged incident happened in the 7300 block of Corsicana Drive, near the intersection of Peterson Road and Stetson Hills Boulevard.
While conducting surveillance on late Wednesday night, just before midnight, a detective located the stolen vehicle, a white Hyundai Elantra, with a person inside, in the 6100 block of Dublin Boulevard, near the intersection with Tutt Boulevard.
“The suspect was known and had an extensive criminal history,” wrote CSPD. “Because of this person’s history, a vehicle block was performed by Sergeant Bauer with the intent of preventing him from escaping.”
According to CSPD, when the minor began to accelerate in an attempt to drive away, “non-lethal means were used to prevent his escape.” The minor then surrendered and was taken into custody before he was transferred to a juvenile detention facility.
“Inside the stolen vehicle, detectives located a loaded 9mm handgun and a BB gun with an extended magazine,” wrote CSPD. According to police, the minor was taken into custody on two counts of motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and felony menacing.
Police said the minor also had several warrants for his arrest for failure to comply with the court regarding other motor vehicle thefts.
