CSPD: Auto theft suspect arrested after stealing from Walmart

(COLORADO SPRINGS)—The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) reported that on Tuesday, May 13, officers found and followed a stolen vehicle to a Walmart. The driver of the car was allegedly observed stealing from the supermarket, leading to an arrest.

According to CSPD, around 8:15 p.m., when the members of the Motor Vehicle Theft Unit first saw the black 2013 Hyundai Elantra at the intersection of East Pikes Peak Avenue and University Drive, near South Academy Boulevard, they identified it as a vehicle that was reported stolen on April 24 from the area near Vindicator Drive and West Rockrimmon Boulevard.

CSPD reported that the detectives followed the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Jeremiah Smith, to a Walmart located at 1622 South Academy Boulevard, near East Fountain Boulevard. When Smith entered the store, the detectives conducted surveillance inside the Walmart and observed Smith allegedly stealing $80 worth of merchandise.

As Smith left the store, he was detained by the detectives and charged with Motor Vehicle Theft and Petty Theft.
