Historic Florence theater remodel begins

(FLORENCE, Colo.) — The historic Rialto Theater in Florence is getting restored to its former glory with the hope that it can continue playing a key role in the community.

The Rialto Theater is a 102-year-old venue located on West Main Street in Florence. The theater was originally an opera house with 900 seats, a wraparound balcony, box seats on both sides, and an orchestra pit.

The theater was made with local yellow bricks, creating a distinct design pattern. The board members of the theater hope the renovations will restore the theater to its former glory so it can continue offering a space for the arts and community for years to come.

“We consider it to be a huge part of our community. We have music, we have plays, we have had comedy, we’ve had dance acts,” said Carolyn Solseth, Rialto Board President. “We also have kids come in, we have a children’s theater. We’ve had memorial services. We consider ourselves a huge part of the community, as far as, if you need a place to have an event, this is the place to have it.”

Solseth also said she hopes the renovation will help surrounding businesses and restaurants thrive.
