FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — A West Virginia home caught fire Monday morning shortly after the owner had purchased a brand new golf cart, which was the cause of the blaze, according to Valley Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Zac Eakle.

Tim Heldreth, who purchased the golf cart earlier Monday morning, said he parked it outside his Fairmont home. After Heldreth then left to visit his sons’ house, his neighbor Shawn Stevens called and told him the golf cart was on fire.
Nexstar’s WBOY spoke to Stevens, who said the golf cart’s battery had “exploded” right next to him when he went to investigate the smoke. After the fire spread to Heldreth’s home, Stevens brought the family’s dog, Riley, out of the burning house.

The source of the fire was a Racka TAO GCEV4G four-seater electric golf cart purchased from Tractor Supply Co. in Morgantown, according to Heldreth.
How the cart caught fire is unknown at this time and is currently under investigation, according to Deputy Chief Eakle. No one was harmed during the fire.
