(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said the driver killed in a crash on Wednesday, May 14, has been identified as 49-year-old Brent Nicklas by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
According to CSPD, on May 14, a little after 8 a.m., police were called to a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of East Boulder Street and North Academy Boulevard just south of East Platte Avenue.
When police arrived, the driver and passenger of one vehicle had to be extracted from the vehicle due to damage. Both the driver and passenger were taken to the hospital, where the driver, later identified as Nicklas, succumbed to his injuries.

CSPD’s Major Crash Team responded to the scene and took over the investigation. According to CSPD, the investigation revealed that one vehicle was traveling south on N. Academy Blvd. in the left through lane, and the second vehicle was traveling east on Boulder, crossing N. Academy Blvd., and turning left to travel north on Academy.
Police said that as the first vehicle entered the intersection, it hit the driver’s side door of the second vehicle.
CSPD said this is the 13th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2025; at this time last year, there were 19 fatalities.
