Suspect wanted on warrants arrested after being caught driving stolen car

(CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo.) — The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) arrested a man who was wanted on various warrants after police identified him driving a stolen car.

On Thursday, June 12, a CCSO deputy located a stolen car out of Alamosa and began a traffic stop on the car along Highway 24 in Buena Vista. When the car came to a stop, the driver, identified as 47-year-old William McCoy from Del Norte, exited the car and escaped on foot.

The deputy was able to apprehend McCoy, who then allegedly assaulted the deputy as he attempted to gain compliance. Both were transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

During a search of the car, deputies found an open container of alcohol, an open container of marijuana, about 1.9 grams of methamphetamine, a debit card that didn’t belong to McCoy, and several items of drug paraphernalia.

McCoy was booked into the Chaffee County Detention Facility, where he was held on a $50,000 bond for multiple charges, including Second-Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, 2nd Degree Motor Vehicle, and Resisting Arrest. McCoy was also arrested on two additional warrants, one in Alamosa County for Domestic Violence Assault and another in the same county for Burglary, Sexual Assault, False Imprisonment, among other charges.

“A very potentially dangerous person was removed from the streets in Chaffee County on this day by Deputy Geske,” said CCSO Sheriff Andy Rohrich. “Deputy Geske’s consistent attention to detail and hard work has proven to be a huge asset to the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office and the safety of the citizens of Chaffee County.”
