CSFD: South side house fire caused by illegal fireworks

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A fire that heavily damaged a home on the south side of Colorado Springs in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 5, was caused by illegal fireworks, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD).

In an update on Monday, July 7, CSFD confirmed that fire investigators had determined the fire was caused by illegal fireworks.

According to CSFD, crews initially responded around 12:21 a.m. on Saturday to a report of a structure fire in the 1200 block of Harrison Road, near the intersection of Lake Avenue and Venetucci Boulevard.

CSFD said the original 911 caller reported they believed someone drove by and started shooting fireworks in the direction of the home. Crews arrived only a few minutes later to find smoke and fire coming from the roof and attic space. The fire was deemed under control about half an hour later.

CSFD said the home sustained heavy fire damage and was deemed uninhabitable. The people inside the home were able to get out without injuries, and no injuries were reported to firefighters. CSFD confirmed that members of the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to assist with the investigation and said further updates on this case would be coming from police.
